This is the second version of an older painting. I painted the first version in 1993 after visiting with my family in the foothills. It was a windy day in springtime, I think. In a cow pasture beside my brother's house grew an old walnut tree, stunted and barely alive after being struck by lightning. In those days I almost always had my camera with me, so I volunteered my niece and nephew to pose before that old tree in the wind. It didn't look much like the one in the painting of course, but it should have.

Someone eventually cut that old walnut tree down. But the hills and the grass are still there, and of course the wind. "The wind is old and still at play," Yeats wrote. But even dragontrees eventually pass away.
