Recent research suggests that making planetary systems is a messy business. Asteroids, comets and entire planets probably get booted out of their orbits and exiled to the interstellar wilderness. You have to wonder about all the primordial junk wandering around in the darkness between stars, and perhaps beyond the galactic rim where dark matter reigns.
