Ye Olde House had a tin roof, which was great for sleeping under when it rained — except when it leaked. It was heated by a single stove in the living room. During the summer, air conditioning was provied by a breeze that blew through the back door and out the front. On the horizon Grandfather Mountain watched over us like a slumbering god. Back then summer seemed to last for years, and childhood went on forever — wide, powerful, and timeless. |
