Physicists tell us there is no such thing as a vacuum at the quantum level. Empty space seethes with swarms of virtual particles that come into being and then cease to exist. A wild idea, true, but it has actually been tested in the laboratory, so apparently it's real. Now I ask you: How can one be aware of such a thing without being affected by it? Matter, the solid stuff of reality, barely seems to exist at all at the quantum level. We emerge from a universe built upon a foundation of ghosts. We live for a while, and then we subside into nonexistence like those virtual particles, barely real at all. I'm telling you, guys, we are up to our necks in mystery.
