This is another early Photoshop rendering. I include it here because, to my utter surprise, it was used on the cover of a book published in Germany, a paperback called Perry Rhodan: Planeten-Romane, by Hans Kneifel.

As the planet's sun grew old and expanded, its oceans evaporated, becoming ever more saline. Certain marine organisms adapted by forming symbiotic colonies inside these stromatolite-like structures. When human explorers arrive these empty shells are all that remain.
